One page autograph signed letter from Joseph R. Hawley to W.M. Hudson on United Stated Senate letterhead dated February 7, 1886. The letter reads: "I order sent to you today a work just out that is considered the best of its class ever issued by any Government, entitled "The Fishery Industries of the United States." The accompanying atlas contains 277 plates, and the list is supposed to contain every useful aquatic animal known in the United States waters. The Smithsonian is very proud of the work."

W.H. Hudson, author and naturalist, was born in Argentina of American parents. While growing up in Argentina, he developed a passion for the wildlife of the Pampas, particularly its birds. He eventually became disillusioned by the effect on the Pampas's ecosystem caused by large-scale immigration of bird-eating Italians.
